Bilingual writing coactivation: Lexical and sublexical processing in a word dictation task

چکیده

Abstract Bilinguals’ two languages seem to be coactivated in parallel during reading, speaking, and listening. However, this coactivation writing has been scarcely studied. This study aimed assess orthographic spelling-to-dictation. We took advantage of the presence polyvalent graphemes Spanish (one phonological representation with specifications, e.g., / b /for both v b) manipulate congruency. Spanish–English bilinguals were presented cross-linguistic congruent (mo ement–mo imiento) incongruent words (go ernment–go ierno) for a dictation task. The time accuracy initiate type rest-of-word (lexical sublexical processing) recorded native language (L1) second (L2). Results revealed no differences between conditions monolinguals. Bilinguals showed congruency interaction better performance stimuli, which was evident from beginning typing L2. Language lexical–sublexical bilinguals’ are discussed.

Lexical decision in children: sublexical processing or lexical search?

Length effects in the lexical decision latencies of children might indicate that children rely on sublexical processing and essentially approach the task as a naming task. We examined this possibility by means of the effects of neighbourhood size and articulatory suppression on lexical decision performance. Sixty-six beginning and 62 advanced readers performed a lexical decision task in a stand...

Lexical-semantic organization in bilingual children: evidence from a repeated word association task.

PURPOSE This study examined lexical-semantic organization of bilingual children in their 2 languages and in relation to monolingual age-mates. METHOD Twelve Mandarin-English bilingual and 12 English monolingual children generated 3 associations to each of 36 words. Responses were coded as paradigmatic (dog-cat) or syntagmatic (dog-bark). RESULTS Within the bilingual group, word association ...

The interaction of lexical and sublexical processes in reading, writing and repetition.

It has recently been proposed that in the course of repetition, reading aloud and writing to dictation, lexical representations are activated and selected for output by the joint operation of the semantic system and of sublexical conversion mechanisms--the Summation Hypothesis [Hillis and Caramazza, Brain Lang. 40, 106-144, 1991]. The hypothesis predicts that semantic errors in oral reading and...

Concreteness in word processing: ERP and behavioral effects in a lexical decision task.

Relative to abstract words, concrete words typically elicit faster response times and larger N400 and N700 event-related potential (ERP) brain responses. These effects have been interpreted as reflecting the denser links to associated semantic information of concrete words and their recruitment of visual imagery processes. Here, we examined whether there are ERP differences between concrete and...
